Best Time to Visit Puerto Rico: Weather, Crowds & Travel Tips
If you’re planning a trip to Puerto Rico, one of the first things you’ll wonder is:
When is the best time to visit Puerto Rico? And the answer can be quite easy, it is a tropical island. Summer all year long! But as someone who lives here, I can tell you each season can feel different.
Let’s break it down in a simple, real way so you can choose what works best for you.
Puerto Rico doesn’t have traditional seasons like colder places.
Instead, we have warm weather all year with:
- A drier season
- A rainier season
Average temperatures stay around:
• mid-80s°F during the day
• high 70s°F at night
But the feeling changes depending on humidity and rain. I’ll explain our “seasons” next:
December to April (Best Overall Time to Visit)
These months tend to bring sunny days, lower humidity, less rain, and really beautiful beach weather, so everything just feels easier and more enjoyable. It’s also when the island feels the most alive, with people out, places open, and a really nice energy overall. Of course, because of that, you can expect more tourists, higher prices, and things booking up faster, so planning ahead helps a lot.
WHAT IS IT LIKE:
- Sunny days
- Lower humidity
- Less rain
- Beautiful beach weather
WHY YOU MIGHT LOVE IT:
- It feels comfortable (Not too hot)
- Great for Exploring + Beach Days
NOTE FROM A LOCAL – IMPORTANT TO READ:
During these months (December to April) We receive a few cold fronts from the USA. Cold fronts cause bad conditions in the ocean/beaches. ALWAYS check the weather and beach conditions before swimming at any beach. Beach currents are deadly and unfortunately there’s drownings from locals and tourists for this specific reason.
It’s great to travel and have fun, but please always check the weather before going into any body of water.
May to August (Hot, Lively & Beachy)
Summer time, nothing much to say! It is super hot, sunny days and some dry days and dusty days.
WHAT IS IT LIKE:
- Hot Sunny Days
- Higher Humidity
- Some Days may be Dusty due to Dust Clouds coming from the African Sahara Desert
- Perfect Beach Weather Days
WHY PEOPLE STILL LOVE IT:
- Perfect Beach Days! More calm waters.
- Longer Days (Sunsets around 6:45pm-07:15pm)
- Summer weather and less risk for hurricanes to come by
NOTE FROM A LOCAL:
For some reason, May can be one of those months that we will have frequent rain. Towards the end of May, we see improvements and summer officially starts in June.

September to November (Rainier + Hurricane Season)
This is the least popular time to visit, but it’s not all bad. It can be a bit risky.
Yes, this is when you’ll see more rain, higher humidity, and it falls during the peak of hurricane season, so it’s something to be aware of. You’ll find lower prices, fewer crowds, and more availability, which can make the trip feel a lot more laid-back. Just keep in mind that the weather can be a bit unpredictable, some days might be rainy, others completely clear.
WHAT IS IT LIKE:
- Higher Chance of Rain
- Peak of Hurricane Season (Important to Consider)
- Very Humid
WHY PEOPLE STILL LOVE IT:
- Lower Prices on Plane Tickets/Hotels or Tourist Guides
- Fewer Tourists
- More Availability
NOTE FROM A LOCAL:
September is the peak of hurricane season, October starts getting slower and it is very rare to get a hurricane in November.
It is important to know that due to the risk of higher chances of rain, beaches and rivers are not to be explored.
