3-Day Puerto Rico Itinerary: West Coast Road Trip Guide
Exploring Points
If you’re looking to explore beyond the touristic area of San Juan, this 3-day Puerto Rico itinerary will take you through the west coast, where the vibe is slower, the beaches are stunning, and the sunsets are unforgettable.
This route is perfect if you want a mix of scenic drives, waterfalls, and beach days without feeling rushed.
The good thing about this Itinerary, is that a lot of the stops are near eachother or in the same route.
3-day Itinerary Puerto Rico
Day 1 Isabela and Aguadilla
Start your road trip to the west. If you’re coming from the San Juan area, the drive will take about an hour and a half. The road trip itself is part of the experience. You’ll start to notice the shift from the busy metro area to a more relaxed and scenic environment.
As you get closer, you’ll know you’re near Isabela when you pass through the breathtaking views along Quebradillas. Locals know this as the unofficial “we made it to the west” moment.
First Stops along the way
Note: The first three stops are within 5 minutes of eachother 🙂
1. Merendero de Guajataca
El Merendero de Guajataca is an awesome spot to stretch your legs after that 1 hour and half drive.
It is a scenic rest stop and lookout point near the Guajataca area. It’s known for its elevated views of the ocean and cliffs, making it a perfect quick stop to relax, take photos, and enjoy the breeze before continuing your drive along the west coast.
2. Guajataca Tunnel
El Tunel de Guajataca was built in the early 1900s for the island’s railway system, this tunnel once carried trains along the dramatic cliffs of the northwest coast.
Today, it opens up to a beautiful beach with ocean views, salty breeze, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it the perfect quick stop during your road trip. It’s an easy walk, super scenic, and one of those places that feels both historic and effortlessly beautiful.
3. La Cara Del Indio
La Cara del Indio, translating to “The Taíno’s Face,” is more than just a sculpture. It holds a deep meaning for us Puerto Ricans.
Cacique Mabodamaca was a Taíno chief from the Isabela area, known for standing up against the Spanish during the early colonization of Puerto Rico. Today, the El Indio Monument honors leaders like him, representing strength, pride, and the island’s indigenous roots.
It’s a quick stop, but one that adds a deeper meaning to your trip.
Let’s continue driving through Isabela
Now continue driving through Isabela. If you want a more tropical and scenic experience, take the coastal road that runs along the ocean.

Jobos Beach, Isabela
- Jobos Beach is one of the most popular spots in the area. Surfers love it, and you’ll find plenty of restaurants and kiosks nearby.
Continue to Aguadilla
You’ll quickly arrive in Aguadilla just by staying on that same scenic road.
If you’re hungry, I genuinely recommend Pesca Restaurant and Bar and this is not sponsored! Being born and raised in Puerto Rico, I can confidently say it’s one of my top three restaurants so far.

Things to do in Aguadilla
Punta Borinquen Golf Club
• Play a round of golf with ocean views right beside you. In Aguadilla, the courses sit so close to the coast that you’ll feel the breeze and hear the waves as you play.
Playa Punta Borinquen
• Right by the golf club there is Playa Punta Borinquen. I would not recommend swimming here, but the views of the white cliffs are beautiful. It is a must-see.
Crash Boat Beach
• Spend time at Crash Boat Beach, one of the most iconic beaches on the island. The water is crystal clear, the vibe is lively, and the famous pier makes it the perfect spot to swim, relax, or just take it all in.
As the day winds down, I recommend staying in the Aguadilla or Isabela area. It sets you up perfectly for Day 2 of your 3-day Puerto Rico itinerary, without feeling rushed and letting you fully enjoy the west coast experience.

Day 2 Gozalandia and Rincón
Start your morning by checking the weather. If there’s no rain expected, you’re good to go!
Gozalandia Waterfalls
8AM
Head to Gozalandia Waterfalls, located about 35 to 45 minutes from Aguadilla or Isabela.
This is one of the easiest waterfall spots to visit on the island, which makes it perfect for a travel itinerary.
This is one of the easiest waterfall spots to visit on the island, which makes it perfect for a travel itinerary.
- The first waterfall is only a 2 to 3 minute walk
- The second waterfall takes about 6 to 8 minutes
- The path is mostly paved, making it accessible and low effort

AFTERNOON
Around early afternoon, drive to Rincón and enjoy a slower pace for the rest of the day.
Relax at the beach, I recommend “Steps Beach” in Rincón. Great for snorkeling.
Explore the town, and most importantly, stay for sunset.
Rincón sunsets are easily some of the best you will see in Puerto Rico, and this moment alone makes this 3-day Puerto Rico itinerary worth it.
Stay overnight in Rincón.

Day 3: Cabo Rojo and Boquerón
We made it to Day 3. Start early and head to Cabo Rojo!
MORNING
Playa Buyé, Cabo Rojo
Spend your morning at Playa Buyé, one of the most beautiful and calm beaches on the island.
The earlier you arrive, the better. In the morning, the water looks incredibly clear and blue. It almost doesn’t feel real.
This is the kind of beach where you’ll want to slow down and stay for a while. There are kiosks and restaurants nearby, so it’s easy to spend most of your day here.
EVENING: BOQUERÓN
If you’re not ready to end your trip just yet, head over to El Poblado de Boquerón in the evening.
This area is underrated and full of life. You’ll find music, food, dancing, and a really fun local atmosphere. It’s the perfect way to wrap up your west coast trip.
