Montones Beach Puerto Rico: A Local Guide to Playa Montones
Map Location
Why Montones Beach is So Special to Me
Montones Beach Puerto Rico is one of the most beautiful and calm beaches on the west coast of the island, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing. This place is so special to me. This beach is engraved in my memory. My family and I used to vacation here every summer, and it quickly became our favorite place. It still is.
Playa Montones is located in the beautiful town of Isabela, about 1.5 to 2 hours from San Juan depending on traffic. I can’t lie, it has been my favorite place for as long as I can remember and I feel like it always will be.
Where is Montones Beach?
This beach is not too far from Jobos Beach, which is one of the most popular beaches in Isabela. It is about a 5 minute drive, and even that drive feels special. It takes you through a scenic tropical area that honestly makes you not want to leave.
What is Montones Beach Like?
Montones has two sides. One side has open water, and the other has a natural pool. The natural pool is very popular for families with kids, toddlers, and babies. It is shallow, about 3 feet, which makes it perfect for relaxing and enjoying the water safely.
Always be careful when swimming in open waters. Always check the forecast for rip currents, which I have a link at the end of this blog.
Can You Snorkel at Montones Beach?
You can also snorkel at Montones. If you walk further into the natural pool, you will notice a deeper area surrounded by rock formations. Don’t worry, you will not accidentally fall into it, you will clearly see the change. A good way to spot it is by looking for people swimming or sitting near the rocks.

Parking at Montones Beach
I recommend paying for parking at Villas Del Mar Hau. It is around $10, and it is safe and very convenient. The area is spacious and easy to walk through, and the villas are right by the ocean which makes the walk even nicer.
Where to Stay Near Montones Beach
Let me talk a little about Villas Del Mar Hau because it is also very special to me. My family and I have stayed here since I was a little girl. They are colorful beach cottages, and some are oceanfront. From my last stay, I remember opening the door and seeing the ocean right in front of me. It is such a peaceful feeling.
It is the perfect place if you are looking for a cozy beach cottage stay with direct access to one of the most beautiful and family friendly beaches.

Food Near Montones Beach
There is an oceanfront restaurant inside Villas Del Mar Hau called Olas y Arena. It is a beautiful place and feels a bit more elevated while still keeping that local charm. They serve breakfast and authentic Puerto Rican food. I can’t deny, I have definitely daydreamed about having a full breakfast there with the ocean view.
One thing we love to do is spend time at the beach and then walk over to Olas y Arena and order “El Surtido” appetizer. It includes mini empanadas, sorullos, cordon bleu, fried pork, fried chicken chunks, fried fish pieces, and plantain chips. It is perfect to share with family.
Right next to it, there is a small kiosk called Kiosko La Pocita. This is a great spot if you want something more simple and quick. They have fried seafood mix, empanadas, cheesedogs, frappes, beer, drinks, and sodas.
They also rent umbrellas and beach chairs, which is very helpful if you do not bring your own.

- Go early for a calmer experience
- Perfect for families and kids
- Combine your visit with Jobos Beach nearby
- If visiting during a holiday, arrive early! Families love this beach and it will get packed.
LOCAL TIP: Before you head to any beach, always check the beach forecast for rip current risk. This forecast can change on a daily basis.
Montones Beach vs Jobos Beach
If you are deciding between the two, they are very close but feel completely different.
Montones is calmer, quieter, and better for swimming.
Jobos is more lively, with stronger waves and a social atmosphere.
If you have time, visiting both in the same day is honestly the best experience.
